Vatican / St. Peter's Basilica

Keine Deutsche Version

A visit to Rome wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Vatican and especially the St. Peter's Basilica.

Queue to the Sixtin Chappel

Our plan was to first visit the famous Sistine Chappel.
Obviously, as you can see above, quite a number of people had the same idea... just a little bit earlier.

For those not familiar with the place: The entrance to the Vatican Museum (and also the Sistine Chappel) is around the corner on the right hand side of above picture. The queue strechted all the way even further to the left than shown here!

Incredible queue for the Vatican Museum

On the left you can see the end of the queue...

Needless to say that we decided to not visit the mueseum and the Sistine Chappel this time.
After all, it's a good excuse to come back to Rome another time! :)

Traditional Swiss Guard Fancy shoes

The famous Swiss Guard is in charge of the safety of the Pope and all of Vatican city.

Of course, the guard doesn't stop people from wearing fancy shoes! Especially in Italy where shoes are both an important part of fashion and reasonably priced...

Inside St. Peter's Basilica a service was underway. This was fortunate since then there are additional lights which allow for much nicer pictures...
On the right below, the famous Pieta from Michelangelo.

In addition to the light inside the Basilica, the sun was shining in through some windows and created some fantastic rays.

A steep climb to the top of the Basilica was of course also on our program. The view is simply breathtaking.

For the very patient visitors of this webpage, there is a 87MB video of the inside of St. Peter's Basilica. It was taken while the service was underway... so expect some singing and a lot of atmosphere!
But remember, the download will take several minutes!
